The Artists for Tichý – Tichý for Artists collection is based on the unique principle of bartering between artists from all over the world for the works of Miroslav Tichý. Currently, the collection comprises over one thousand works by more than two hundred artists, with many of Tichý’s works now in the homes and studios of artists around the world.
The idea of a collection based on the principle of exchange began in 1992, when the famous Austrian artist Arnulf Rainer visited Miroslav Tichý in his hometown of Kyjov with the intention of buying some of his works. Tichý flatly refused the sale, but had nothing against the exchange. Rainer’s large-format paintings were the first pieces of what later became a large collection of works by world-famous and lesser-known artists.
The art represented in the collection is united by an interest in the personality of Miroslav Tichý and an admiration for his work. One may wonder what makes the figure of Tichý so fascinating to such a diverse group of creative people across generations. Was it his life dedicated to an art that is so distinctive in itself that it needs neither publicity nor recognition? An uncompromising devotion to the work, affirming the inseparability of life and art? Whatever the case, Tichý’s legacy remains to this day a living organism that never ceases to inspire.
